BetAnySports Weekly College Basketball Betting Report For Jan. 28
With the month of January drawing to a close, the cream is starting to rise to the top in a number of the top college basketball conferences. Wins and losses this time of the year can still play an important role in shaping the 68-team field for the NCAA Tournament come mid-March.
The SEC is better known for football, but the Tennessee Volunteers continue to lead the way as the top basketball team in the nation in both major polls. They hammered West Virginia 83-66 on Saturday closing as 15-point home favorites in that SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchup. The Volunteers have now won their last 14 games straight-up while covering BetAnySports’ closing spread in six of their last eight games. Tennessee will be on the road against South Carolina on Tuesday night.
Over in the ACC, it is no big surprise that the Duke Blue Devils are at the top of those standings as traditional basketball powers. They are ranked No. 2 in both polls at 17-2 SU with an 11-8 record ATS. Duke knocked off Georgia Tech 66-53 on Saturday, but came nowhere close to covering as a 22.5-point home favorite. The Blue Devils are 1-4 ATS in their last five games heading into Monday night’s road game against Notre Dame as 14-point favorites.

The next-best team in the ACC is the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers. They are 18-1 SU and one of the best betting teams in the nation at 16-3 ATS. Virginia bounced back from a tough two-point road loss to Duke on Jan. 19 as a 3.5-point underdog with a pair of victories (SU and ATS) against Wake Forest at home and Notre Dame on the road closing as a double-digit favorite. The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday night in a road game against North Carolina State.
The No. 4 team in the nation is the West Coast Conference’s Gonzaga Bulldogs. They continue to roll through their WCC schedule with six SU double-digit victories while going 4-2 ATS. The Bulldogs held Santa Clara to just 39 points while scoring 98 their last time out. They will face their toughest test to date on Thursday night in a road game against BYU.
Rounding out the Top 5 in the AP poll is the Big Ten’s Michigan Wolverines. The Michigan State Spartans were ranked No. 5 in last week’s Coaches Poll, but they should drop a bit this week after losing to Purdue 73-63 on Sunday as slight 1.5-point road underdogs on BetAnySports’ closing line.
